Naan

Vegan naan (really good)

4 naans

Ingredients

  • 3 cups (375 g) flour
  • 1 tbsp (16 g) sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp (3 g) dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 tsp (6 g) salt
  • 1 cup (225 g) yogurt
  • 1/2 cup (120 g) warm water
  • 3 tbsp (42 g) butter or coconut oil, melted
  • minced garlic and cilantro, optional

Recipe

  1. Whisk together the flour, sugar, salt, and yeast.
  2. Separately, combine the yogurt, melted butter (or coconut oil), and warm water until smooth.
  3. Add wet to dry ingredients and combine with a wooden spoon to form a wet dough.
  4. Knead with your hands for about 1-2 min (dough will be very sticky). Shape into a rough ball and turn seam-side down. Cover the bowl, rise 30-40 minutes.
  5. Turn the dough onto a floured surface. Divide the dough into equal 4 pieces and shape into balls, dusting with flour as needed.
  6. Cover with a towel and let rise while oven preheats (45 min).
  7. Oven: 550 ºF = 290 °C, or as hot as it goes, position rack at 1/3 from top, preheat 45 min.
  8. After the second rise, roll the dough with a rolling pin to shape it into a teardrop shape: roll into a rough circle, then roll one part of the circle or stretch it to make a more triangular shape.
  9. Brush the top with melted butter (or coconut oil) and sprinkle on minced garlic if making garlic naan.
  10. Transfer to the hot oven.
  11. Bake for 3-5 minutes until there are some golden spots on the bubbled surface. If desired, turn on the broiler for 1-2 minutes after 3-4 minutes of baking.
  12. For restaurant style presentation, brush the hot dough with some more butter, sprinkle with cilantro to serve.
